Relax on the sand and swim in the ocean at this protected public cove.

The Boulders Beach swimming cove offers a rare chance to share the water with wild African penguins. Massive 540-million-year-old granite boulders frame the white sand and protect the bay from wind and large waves.

Summer months from October to March offer the best beach weather and water temperatures for swimming. Remember that this is a protected marine area. You must not touch or feed the penguins.

The Public Beach

1-2 hoursBest at low tide

This sandy cove is shielded from strong waves, making it an excellent spot for sunbathing. It is one of the only places globally where wild penguins swim past visitors in the ocean. Visit at low tide to maximize your beach space. At high tide, the sand area becomes very narrow.

Granite Rock Pools

30 minutesWatch for slippery rocks

The massive granite boulders create calm, shallow rock pools. These enclosed ocean pools offer a safe place for children to splash in the water. Watch your step because the wet boulders get slippery. Always check rocky nooks for resting penguins before you climb.
